Plan Your Nye Transport

To enjoy a hassle-free evening out and to make the most of Sydney New Year's Eve 2024, leave your car at home and plan to get to the celebrations in Sydney CBD and North Sydney by public transport.

Accessibility

Customers with specific accessibility needs must plan their trip for NYE in advance as there will be plenty of road closures in place throughout the CBD. However, you can take advantage of the government-aided extra services for an easy commute.

Avoid The Crowds On The Way Home

Getting back home from the city is different on New Year’s Eve.The way you arrive at your destination will be different from the way you leave. But no need to fret! There will be plenty of staff on the ground to help you find your way back to the transport hubs. However, be prepared for long walks to the buses and trains.

Ticketing Options

Using the smartcard ticketing system to avail the public transport services is most recommended on New Year’s Eve. Try using an Opal card or American Express, Visa contactless card, Mastercard or any other linked device.

Trains

Extra trains to the Sydney CBD will run during the day to and fro the New Year’s Eve celebrations and into the early hours of the new year. However, the midnight trains will not drop off passengers at the Circular Quay Station past 5pm till midnight. To get to the harbour foreshore vantage points, use Wynyard, St. James or Martin Place.

From 6pm until midnight, the trains headed to the north shore will not stop at Milsons Point; get off at North Sydney Station to get to the vantage points around Milsons Point and Kirribilli.

Also note that trains will not stop at the Domestic Airport and International Airport Stations from 12:30 am to 4:30 am as the Sydney Airport will remain closed during this time.

Train Tickets

Return train tickets purchased on New Year's Eve are valid until 12 noon on New Year's Day.

Return train tickets to the Sydney CBD are valid for one journey to and from Central, Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St James, Museum, Martin Place or Kings Cross. For travel to North Sydney or Milsons Point, you need a ticket to these stations.

A Station access fee applies for travel from Domestic and International Airport Stations.

Bus

Extra buses on major routes will be deployed to get you to and from the Sydney CBD and North Sydney. Temporary bus stops and diversions will be in place from 3pm and 7 pm.

NB: Bus services in local council areas will be affected by road closures.

Bus Tickets

Special New Year's Eve bus ticket: $6 adult, $3 concession, and it allows unlimited travel on regular State Transit operated Sydney Buses services between 3pm New Year's Eve and 12 noon New Year's Day.

Ferries

Ferry services are the most popular way to commute on New Year’s Eve and it typically reaches its capacity from mid-afternoon. If you’re planning to catch the ferry, be prompt and early to get your tickets. Ferry wharves including Circular Quay, McMahons Point and Milsons Point will reach capacity during the day; access to these wharves will be affected by evening.

All ferries will stop operating between 8pm and 12:45am when the exclusion zones are in place.

FerRy Tickets

Do not buy a return ferry ticket unless you plan to catch one of the extra services leaving after the fireworks, otherwise you may get held up longer than you expect.

Light Rail

The Light Rail services will run regularly through the Sydney CBD, Inner West suburbs and South East. The services will operate along the L1 Dulwich Hill line, L2 Randwick line and L3 Kingsford line on New Year’s Eve. More information will be available here closer to the time.

Light Rail Tickets

Special New Year's light rail ticket: $5 adult $3 concession allows unlimited travel between 5.30am on New Year's Eve and 5am on New Year's Day. Tickets are sold on board the light rail.

Metro

Metro services on New Year’s Eve will start from 4am on December 31st and continue regularly through until the early morning on New Year’s Day. The trains will take passengers to several vantage points in the city from Epping. To get to the lower north shore, change trains at Chatswood that connect with trains to North Sydney.

Night Ride Tickets

You can use any valid return train ticket.

Tickets are also sold on board.

It is an offence to drink alcohol or carry open alcohol on public transport, including at train stations, bus and light rail stops and ferry wharves.
